About this workshop
This workshop is part of a series of meetings on the theme of carbon-climate feedbacks. The gathering will bring together carbon experts to identify outstanding questions about how the terrestrial water and carbon cycles are coupled together. Participants will discuss how two major upcoming Earth satellite missions at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, SMAP and OCO-2, could be used to answer some of those questions.

The workshop is part of a series of meetings on the theme of carbon-climate feedbacks. Carbon-climate feedbacks are often driven by changes in the water cycle, through drought and freeze-thaw. This gathering will bring together carbon experts to identify outstanding questions about how Earth's water and carbon cycles are coupled together. Participants will discuss how two major upcoming Earth satellite missions at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory - SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) and OCO-2 (Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2), both launching in 2014 - could be used to answer some of those questions. The simultaneous flights of OCO-2 and SMAP offer a unique opportunity to study the carbon and water cycles and how they are intricately connected.
Workshop Goals
The goals are to:
a) identify key carbon- and water-cycle science priorities
b) identify the data products from these missions, field research and modeling that could help answer these questions over the next 1-3 years

One or more papers describing this “virtual mission” to engage a broader community with the SMAP and OCO-2 data.

Driving Directions: Take Sepulveda Blvd. south to the Glenn Anderson Fwy (105) east to the Harbor Fwy (110) north to the Pasadena Fwy, which becomes the Arroyo Parkway.
OR
Take the San Diego Fwy (405) north to the Santa Monica Fwy (10) east to the Harbor Fwy (110) north to the Pasadena Fwy, which becomes the Arroyo Parkway.
THEN
Take Arroyo Parkway straight ahead (north); turn right (east) on Del Mar Avenue. Proceed approximately one and a quarter miles. The Caltech campus will be on your right. Turn right (south) onto Michigan Avenue. Turn right into the outdoor parking lot and park in an unmarked spot. Buy a parking permit from the kiosks near the middle of the lot or request one ahead of time from KISS.
Shuttle service: To get a shuttle, exit the baggage claim area and look for the ORANGE overhead "SHARED RIDE VANS" sign. Tell the driver you are going to Caltech; if you are asked for an address or intersection, Del Mar Blvd. and Michigan Avenue.

Driving Directions: Take the Golden State Fwy (Interstate 5) south to the Ventura Fwy (134) east to the Foothill Fwy (210) east. Exit at Hill Avenue. Turn right (south) onto Hill. JPLers may use their JPL hang tag for parking or request a special parking hangtag from the JPL parking office.

Caltech is easily accessible from both the 110 (Harbor) Freeway (southwest of campus) and the 210 (Foothill) Freeway (north of campus).

Downtown Los Angeles to Pasadena: The MTA 401 Express bus can be boarded on Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles, approximately three blocks west of Union Station. Exit in Pasadena at Colorado and Wilson; Caltech is approximately three blocks south.
The MTA 485 bus boards at the Busway off of Alameda, in front of Union Station. Exit at Lake and California in Pasadena and walk east to Caltech.
Caltech to JPL: Board the westbound MTA 177 bus on California Blvd. Discounted monthly and weekly bus passes, as well as student passes, are available through both Foothill Transit and MTA. Bus and transit maps are not available in bookshops or other local businesses, but may be picked up at the Patsaouras Transit Plaza (behind Union Station) in Los Angeles or in the Keith Spalding Building on the Caltech campus.
